What is IAS exam?
The IAS exam (formally known as the Civil Services Examination) is carried out by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) yearly.
Stage I: IAS Exam – UPSC Prelims
- The questions in the IAS Exam (Prelims) are of the objective type or Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
- There is ‘Negative Marking’ in the IAS Exam for each wrong answer but only in the Prelims stage.
- The GS Paper II (CSAT) in IAS exam is of qualifying nature and applicant should score a minimum of 33 per cent in this paper to qualify to the next phase of the IAS exam i.e. the Mains.
- Blind applicants are given an additional time of 20 minutes for each paper in the IAS Exam (Prelims).
- It is obligatory for the candidates to appear in both the papers of civil services prelims exam for the evaluation.
- The marks scored by the candidates in the preliminary examination are not counted for the final score. It is only a screening test where candidates not securing the cut-off marks are removed.

Stage III: IAS Exam – UPSC Interview/Personality Examination
Applicants who clear the Mains phase of the IAS exam with the essential cut-off marks qualify for the final stage of the IAS exam i.e., the Personality Test or Interview round with the UPSC Board Members. The candidates who qualify to the last stage will be sent an e-summon by the Commission for a face-to-face conversation round with the board members. In this round, the board assesses the personality traits of the candidates and problems will be asked on their hobbies, current affairs, general knowledge, situation questions, etc. to assess if they are fit for a profession in the civil services or not. The UPSC personality test will be supposed only in the UPSC Bhavan in New Delhi.
IAS Exam Age Limit and Attempts
There are situations of nationality, age, number of attempts and educational qualification if candidates desire to take the IAS exam. For the general category candidates, the applicant must be a inhabitant of India or a PIO, must have a graduate degree, must be between the ages of 21 and 32, and must not have performed the IAS exam 6 times. Education Qualification
The educational requirements for taking the UPSC Exam are mentioned below:

- Any of the universities approved by the University Grants Commission should conduct the graduation (UGC).
- If you are in your last year of graduation, you are qualified to apply for the position.

Personality Test
- The candidates will be questioned by a Board of knowledgeable plus unbiased observers who will have before them a record of their profession. The object of the interview is to calculate the personal appropriateness of the candidate for the Service. The applicant will be expected to have taken an intellectual interest not only in his/her subjects of academic study but also in events that are happening around him.
- The technique of the interview is not that of a strict cross-examination, but of a natural, though directed and purposive conversation, intended to reveal the mental qualities of the candidate.
